Chelsea’s Derry, 18, taken to hospital after head injury
LONDON, England, May 4, 2026 – Teenage Chelsea forward Jesse Derry has been taken to hospital as a precaution after sustaining a head injury in the 3-1 Premier League loss to Nottingham Forest.
The 18-year-old was making his top-flight debut on Monday when he clashed heads with opponent Zach Abbott in the Forest penalty area in the 45th minute.
He received oxygen on the pitch before being taken off the field on a stretcher after a lengthy stoppage.
Chelsea said in a statement Derry is “conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks”.
After the match Chelsea caretaker boss Callum McFarlane told BBC Match of the Day: “All signs are positive at the moment so we’re hopeful he’s in a good condition and from what we’ve heard it’s positive.
“Gutted for Jesse, I thought he did well in the game. He gave us a threat – a massive moment for him that has ended sadly.”
Derry, the son of former Leeds and Crystal Palace midfielder Shaun Derry, was making his first start for the club having made two appearances off the bench in the FA Cup this campaign.
The England Under-19 winger has scored 12 goals in 29 academy matches this season since joining from Crystal Palace last summer.
His clash of heads resulted in a penalty being awarded to Chelsea, but Cole Palmer’s spot-kick was saved by Forest keeper Matz Sels.
Derry was replaced by Liam Delap who came on as a concussion substitute.

It marks an unfortunate end to what has been a medal harvest for Kiarie who has so far won two gold at the continental competition.
On Saturday, he won gold in the freestyle battle category, following it up with another in classic slalom on Sunday.
His performances in North Africa won him widespread admiration and honour from his fellow countrymen and women who applauded him for his tenacious attitude in pursuit of the top levels of the sport.
Among those to pay tribute to Kiarie was President William Ruto who saluted him for his talent and passion that has thus far spurred his success.
Kiarie shot into national and continental limelight last month when he won gold and silver at the International Challenge Skating Championships in Benin.

On loan from TP Mazembe, the promising attacker displayed his high level to help the hosts earn their first points of the championship phase against Kinshasa-based VClub.
Following a scoreless first half, the hosts needed inspiration after dropping to a 0-2 defeat in their playoff opener against AS Maniema Union. After the hour mark, a corner kick appeared to pass without incident for the VClub defense but Mpoyo collected the ball on the left wing and provided a perfect cross for Molindo Mbala to nod in the opening goal.
Minutes later, Mpoyo provided the decisive moment that was too much for VClub to bounce back from. A swift counter-attack found the attacker in space. After running at a defender, Mpoyo saw goalkeeper Jackson Lunanga off his line and chipped a perfectly weighted shot over the retreating shot stopper who was left in disbelief.
The club from the capital did get a goal back late but the Black Dolphins have now dropped to defeat in their first two playoff matches.
Lubumbashi continues to be the focal point of the playoffs and a massive derby will take place on Tuesday when action continues. TP Mazembe will take on rivals FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo at the same venue in the Lushois Derby, where Mazembe will hope to make it two wins from two matches.
