The Kenya Morans winger revealed that he has been struggling with a fracture, which kept him out of action for a majority of the year before his return for the National Sevens Circuit (NSC).
“I mean, it has been very tough for me. From the start of the year, on January 1st, I had a fracture. So, for me coming back and being able to participate at this level, I am very grateful for what I have achieved,” the Butula High School alumnus said.
Ambale’s return to action couldn’t have gone any better after he played a starring role in his team’s triumph at the past weekend’s Dala 7s in Kisumu.
He was on the mark, scoring a second half try as the sugar millers beat arch-rivals Menengai Oilers 17-5 to win a trophy they last hoisted in 2024.
It was the icing on the cake of a sweet outing for Ambale whose impact in the NSC was clear for all and sundry from the first leg of the competition at the Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru, a fortnight ago.
At the lakeside, he added to his 51 points accumulated in Nakuru to take his tally to 128 and cement his position at the leaderboard as the highest points scorer across two legs.
Ambale was justifiably crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at Dala 7s, an individual honour that the youngster reveals has motivated him to continue giving his best for the sake of Kabras Sugar.
“Definitely, of course, it motivates me to keep taking it and also to win the next leg. That is what we are here for. I would say we have a very good squad coming up. This year, we are going to, as I said, we are going to be unpredictive and hopefully we are going to win the overall tournament,” he said.
Borrowing from his painful experience of the last six months, the former Bath Academy Rugby player has lent a word of encouragement to anyone stuck in the cul-de-sac of life, with seemingly no way out of their afflictions.
“I would just tell them to be patient, it takes a lot of time. Just be patient and keep working every time. If you have life and you have injuries, just do those small things that matter and hopefully you will just pay off,” he said.
As the NSC heads to Nairobi for the third leg of competition (August 15-16), Ambale will be looking to continue reaping the dividends of patience and persistence amid a trying time on the treatment table.
Big Vic: Lions best bet to beat All Blacks
Former Springbok lock Victor Matfield believes the Lions are the most likely of South Africa’s four URC teams to upset the touring All Blacks.
New Zealand begin their seven-match tour of South Africa against the Stormers in Cape Town on Friday night before also facing the Sharks and Vodacom Bulls ahead of the first Test against the Springboks. They then take on the Lions in a midweek fixture before the second Test.
Matfield believes the Stormers are capable of asking plenty of questions despite missing several Boks.
“They demonstrated at the start of last season’s URC campaign that they can play excellent rugby without their star players,” he said on the Rugby Rivals podcast.
“The Stormers boast a very strong pack of forwards. I think they will aim to put the All Blacks under immense pressure in the scrums.
“They are also the one South African team that boasts a lot of X-factor players. You never know what a player like Warrick Gelant might come up with.
“I think they won’t hold back; they’ll play attacking rugby and see if they can cause an upset against the All Blacks.”

Matfield, however, expects the tourists to edge the opening clash.
“I’ve said before that it’s going to be very difficult for our four SA teams to beat the All Blacks.”
If one side can do it, though, he believes it is Ivan van Rooyen’s Lions.
“If you look at the Lions’ squad, they are the one URC team that has released the fewest players to the Springboks,” Matfield said.
“That, and the fact that their match against the All Blacks takes place just a few days after the first Test, might give them the best chance of causing an upset.”

Vihiga Cranes, Terem, Musokoto crowned Busia champions in Safaricom Chapa Dimba
NAIROBI, Kenya, August 4, 2026 – Busia’s Chakol Queens successfully defended their county title for the second consecutive time after edging out Falcon Queens 1-0 in the Busia County final played at Malaba Primary School.
In the boys’ contest, visitors Musokoto Secondary School from Nambale Constituency silenced home side Malaba Homeboys in a highly spirited encounter at the same venue.
John Onyango opened the scoring for the visitors in the fourth minute to put his side in front.
Malaba Homeboys pushed for an equaliser but were unable to find a way through before Sanchez Omondi sealed the victory for Musokoto FC with a late strike to make it 2-0 and send the home side packing.
“I am happy to have retained the title for the second consecutive time. As you know, it is not easy to retain a title, especially with the tough competition at the grassroots level. The game was tough. We are used to playing the ball on the ground, while our opponents preferred aerial balls, which took us some time to adjust to. However, after studying their game, we decided to keep possession and capitalise on the opportunities we created to beat them,” Chakol head coach Abraham Muleme said.
Elsewhere, last year’s regional champions Brenda Girls and Ebwali Boys failed to make it to the regional finals after being knocked out.
Brenda Girls were eliminated in the playoffs at Bungoma High School Grounds, while Vihiga’s Ebwali Boys narrowly fell 1-0 to Coach Francis Muhambe’s Vihiga Cranes in a tightly contested encounter, handing the Cranes the Vihiga County title.
Still in Vihiga, Maroon Queens fell 2-0 to Blue Commandos, with both goals scored by Victoria Nekesa, as the new entrants booked their place in the regional finals.
In Bungoma County, Elgon Queens from Mt. Elgon were crowned the new champions after defeating St. Augustine Girls Lukhuna 5-4 on penalties after 1-1 draw in the girls’ final.
In the boys’ category, Terem FC booked their place in the regional finals after edging out Misikhu Friends School 5-3 on penalties following a barren draw in regular time.
“We came prepared for this game. After watching our opponents play in yesterday’s playoffs, we knew it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. Although we had hoped to win in regular time, that didn’t happen. However, I am happy my boys showed great composure during the penalty shootout and converted all our spot-kicks to win the title. From here, we now embark on preparations for the regional finals, as we know it is going to be tough. My aim is to reach the national finals and have some of my players make the All-Star Team that will travel to Sweden for the Gothia Cup,” Terem FC head coach Evans Kimungui said.
The winners from the three counties will be joined by the Kakamega County champions, whose finals are scheduled for the coming weekend on August 8-9 at Bukhungu Stadium.
“It has always been my wish and prayer to participate in Chapa Dimba. Today, I am glad that I am not just participating but also showcasing my talent to the world through this well-organised platform. I am happy with the win, and I want to assure our fans that as we head to the regional finals, we will not let them down,” Terem FC captain Owen Kiprop said.
The winning boys’ and girls’ teams were each awarded KES 75,000, while the runners-up received KES 30,000.
The Best Goalkeeper, Top Scorer and Most Valuable Player (MVP) in each category took home KES 10,000.
In addition, the MVPs will receive fully funded tertiary education scholarships under the Safaricom Citizens of the Future Programme.
