Maguire signs one-year contract at Man Utd
MANCHESTER, England, April 7, 2026 – Former captain Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contractwith Manchester United, with the option to extend for a further year.
The 33-year-old central defender’s current deal was due to expire at the end of this season.
Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City for £80m in 2019 – a world record transfer fee for a defender.
He has made 266 appearances for United, winning the League Cup in 2022-23 and the FA Cup the following season.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day,” Maguire said.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.”
Maguire’s time at Manchester United has been turbulent.
He was appointed captain just five months after his arrival by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but was later criticised by some despite continuing to be selected by the Norwegian and his successor Ralf Rangnick.
In April 2022, Cheshire Police conducted a sweep of his house after he received a bomb threat.
Maguire fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag and was stripped of the captaincy in July 2023. Shortly afterwards, a deal was agreed for a move to West Ham but he decided to stay at Old Trafford.
He also struggled for game time under Ruben Amorim before enjoying a revival under interim boss Michael Carrick, starting all 10 matches since his appointment in mid-January.
Maguire added: “You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
Director of football Jason Wilcox said: “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United.
“He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.”
‘A leader in the dressing room’ – analysis
Chief football news reporter
It has been clear for months now that it suited both Harry Maguire and Manchester United for their partnership to be extended beyond the end of the season, when his contract was due to expire.
Maguire and his family are settled in the north-west, United valued the 33-year-old’s experience, a factor that has taken on more importance this summer given the impending exit of Casemiro.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was determined to sign Maguire from Leicester in 2019, which is why United ended up paying £80m for him. It was not long before he was installed as captain.
Erik ten Hag had a different view of Maguire’s qualities, took the armband away and was willing to let him join West Ham in the summer of 2023.
Even though United accepted a £30m offer from the Hammers, Maguire said no. He has played 91 times for the club since, under four different managers, which underlines how highly rated he is.
With Maguire, critics tend to focus on the aspects of his game he is not so good at. His managers – generally – look at what he can do: Calm under pressure, strong in the tackle, good passing range, positional awareness, superb mentally, a leader in the dressing room.
Maguire may not be at quite the same levels as when he arrived at Old Trafford, but most United fans will delight in the news he is staying around for a bit longer at least.

Mdunyelwa urges Sundowns to carry momentum into City clash
Mamelodi Sundowns defender Zuko Mdunyelwa has warned his side to expect a tough away test when they face Durban City in Tuesday night’s Betway Premiership clash.
Kick-off is at 7:30 pm at Chatsworth Stadium, with three vital points on the line. Sundowns head into the encounter looking to protect their two-point advantage over Orlando Pirates at the top of the table.

For the hosts, the stakes are just as high. A win would see City climb from sixth to fourth place, moving level on 38 points with AmaZulu while boasting a superior goal difference.
Mdunyelwa is particularly cautious of a confident City outfit, fresh from booking their place in the Nedbank Cup final after edging Casric Stars last weekend.
“In the Durban City camp, the mood is definitely high because they are in the final and they know their strength and their capabilities,” he said.
“For us, it’s also very important to understand that it’s an away game and we need the three points to keep going. We have the momentum and we just need to keep going.”
Despite a looming trip to Tunisia for their CAF Champions League semi-final first leg against Espérance, Mdunyelwa insists Sundowns remain fully focused on the immediate task.
“We as players want to take it one game at a time and our main focus is Durban City. We haven’t even touched on the trip to Tunisia as our main focus is on Durban City as things stand,” Mdunyelwa concluded.

Masters: Golf stars open up about Tiger Woods’ treatment battle
Tiger Woods was missing from the Masters on Monday, but the 15-time major winner was in the hearts and minds of several stars at Augusta National.
Woods stepped away from golf last week to begin treatment after pleading not guilty following a DUI arrest near his Florida home after a car crash, telling police he was looking at his phone just before the accident, in which there were no injuries.
Police later revealed Woods was found with two hydrocodone pills, an opioid painkiller, and appeared unable to safely drive a vehicle when he was apprehended.
“He’s just a human being like everyone else and we have struggles,” said Jason Day, the 2015 PGA Championship winner from Australia.
“It’s unfortunate. The only thing that I don’t understand is that it’s a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm’s way as well.
“But when you’re the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything, and that’s probably why he’s probably driving and a little bit under the influence.”
Back and leg surgeries
Fred Couples, a pal of Woods and the 1992 Masters champion, was happy to hear Woods had flown to Switzerland.
“If he’s in Switzerland he must be at a spot that’s going help him and that’s the key thing,” Couples said.
“Probably won’t see him for a few months, and when he comes back, hopefully we can keep in touch.”
Day’s thoughts were on the struggle ahead of Woods at age 50 with numerous back and leg surgeries.
“In regards to Tiger, it just shows the human element and the human side of someone that is struggling with some sort of an addiction,” Day said.
“He’s not immune to it just because he can hit a golf ball really well. He’s had 25- to 30- something surgeries and when you’re going through that many procedures, it’s painful coming out of those procedures.
“I’ve had procedures done and I typically try and stay away from all that stuff because I just know that painkillers, there can potentially be a downfall to it.”
High attention on Woods will only make matters tougher, Day said.
“It’s hard to see him go through what he’s going through, and especially under the microscope – it must be hard to be who he is and have everything, everyone look kind of down on him,” Day said.
“Some people want him to fail. Some people obviously want him to succeed. It’s really difficult for me to go through that and watch him. I know that he’s getting the help now, which is good. I’m just hoping he comes out on the other side and is better.”
Couples has battled back pain for decades.
“I’d tell him I love him and things can always get better,” Couples said. “I used to snap at everyone… after eight to 10 hours you just can’t take it… pain is a rough thing.”
Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, summed up the loss felt at Augusta with Woods absent.
“Hopefully he’s able to get a speedy recovery and get back here to golf as fast as he can,” Reed said.
‘A little bit sad’
Day said Woods has plenty of support among golfers
“People out here do support him and want him to kind of get through this,” Day said.
“It must be tough to be isolated the way he is normally. He stays at home pretty much most of the time, doesn’t really get out too much just because of how popular he is as a person…
“Sometimes you don’t have people around, loving people around enough to be able to steer you in the direction that you need to.
“He’s human and we all make mistakes. That’s just part of learning and getting better, and I’m hoping that he gets the help that he needs and that he comes out stronger and better on the other side … it’s a little bit sad to not have him here this week.”
