Harambee Stars striker, Olympic champion and top pro golfer to battle for top sports award

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 8, 2026 – Harambee Stars striker Ryan Ogam, top pro golfer Njoroge Kibugu and world 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi are among nominees for the 2025 Sports Personality of the Year (SOYA) award.

The nomination is a just reward for the ex-Tusker marksman who starred for Harambee Stars at last year’s African Nations Championships (CHAN) during which he scored three goals as the national football side reached the quarters of the continental competition.

Originally a defensive midfielder, the 20-year-old broke into national limelight with a season-high 15 goals for Tusker before suffering an injury midway through the 2024/25 season.

His star performance at CHAN earned him a big move to Austrian side AC Wolfsberger where he continues to stomp on the door of the starting XI.

While Ogam was grabbing the headlines in Kenyan football, Kibugu was outshining his peers on the golf scene.

He made history as the first Kenyan — and East African — to qualify for the prestigious Sunshine Development Tour in South Africa after a dominant showing at the East Africa Swing.

He claimed three titles in the inaugural Sunshine Development Tour-East Africa Swing.

The 22-year-old’s first win was in June at the Thika Greens Resort where he managed a three-day total of 15-under-par 201.

He won in Nyali, the third leg of the Tour with a total score of 2-over-par 215 then sealed a hat-trick at the Betika Masters, which was the seventh leg, at VetLab Sports Club on 10-under-par 206.

Kibugu ended the season as Kenya’s top golfer, ranked 1608th in the world rankings.

His excellent performances translated to the 2026 Magical Kenya Open where he was the only Kenyan to make the cut for round three of the competition.

Rebirth of Rudisha

Elsewhere, Wanyonyi continues to show that he is an able replacement for ‘King’ David Rudisha as the phenomenon of the men’s 800m.

Having won the Olympic title a year before in Paris, the youngster added the world crown to his medal collection, clocking 1:41.86 to triumph in Tokyo.

That victory in Japan was the culmination of a dominant run in the Diamond League Series, having won in Oslo, Stockholm, Monaco, Zurich and London.

Wanyonyi also clocked a national record of 3:52.45 to win the men’s mile at the Adizero Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Also in contention for the SOYA top gong is Nairobi City Thunder’s Albert Odero who was central to the team’s progression to a first-ever Basketball Africa League (BAL) in Kigali, Rwanda.

The American-based ‘baller’ scored crucial 16 points to assist Thunder beat Uganda’s Nam Blazers in the BAL Elite 16 opening game to qualify for semis.

Odero was the hero for Thunder in the semifinal against South Africa’s Johannesburg Giants where he scored a powerful dunk at the buzzer to seal the 86-83 win.

He was the game’s highest points scorer on 32.

The awards gala are set for Friday evening at the Uhuru Gardens.

Why Harambee Stars legend Victor Wanyama has no regrets over retirement

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 8, 2026 – Harambee Stars midfielder Victor Wanyama says he has no regrets about retiring from football at a ‘young age’ of 34.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton midfield lynchpin says time was nigh for him to hang his boots, having struggled with a knee injury for a while.

“I would say I am lucky to manage my injury for the past six years and finish like this. So, I have no regrets,” Wanyama said.

The former national team skipper announced his retirement from the game on Friday last week, following a longstanding career that began at low-tier side Country Bus FC.

Wanyama’s journey to the elite leagues is an archetypal grass-to-grace story that saw him rub shoulders with the who-is-who in football.

Having travelled to Belgium for trials, Wanyama was signed by Beerschot in 2008 for who he played for three seasons before Scottish giants Celtic came calling.

One of his biggest highlights under head coach Neil Lennon was a bullet header against Barcelona in a Uefa Champions League tie in which they won 2-1.

He also won two Scottish Premiership titles with the team before packing his bags for the South coast of England to join Southampton in 2013.

Following Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from the Saints, Wanyama followed the Argentine in 2016 to Spurs where he played a further four years.

At Tottenham, one of the most memorable moments was a scorcher in an English Premier League tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

Wanyama would spend a further four years (2020-24) at Canadian side Montreal CF with who he won the national championship in 2021.

His last workstation was at Scottish second-tier side Dunfermline Athletics in 2024, where he was reunited with his former coach at Celtic, Lennon.

What next for Wanyama?

Following his retirement, Wanyama has expressed a desire to venture into coaching upon completing his Uefa A licensing course.

The midfielder is looking forward to working with young players.

“Hopefully, I will be done with that (coaching course) and then I look forward to moving to club coaching…and working with young players…something like that,” he said.

With the knowledge garnered from years on the pitch, Wanyama’s transition to the touchline could prove a Godsend to young players looking for someone to emulate.

Pirates fans may only have seven games left to watch Mofokeng

Relebohile Mofokeng could be entering the final stretch of his Orlando Pirates career, with just seven matches potentially remaining in Buccaneers colours.

The 21-year-old playmaker has enjoyed a sensational rise since making his debut in 2023, contributing over 30 goals for the Soweto giants.

During that time, he has lifted six trophies and established himself as one of the standout performers in the Premier Soccer League.

After a slow start to the current campaign, Mofokeng found top form following the 2025 AFCON tournament. He has since been in scintillating touch, scoring nine goals in 2026 and adding three assists.

Mofokeng is Pirates best player by far

His performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him the Betway Premiership Player of the Month award for both February and March. He is now widely considered a leading contender for the PSL Player of the Season accolade.

The youngster headed into the FIFA international break on a high, netting his first senior hat-trick before following it up with a brace against Golden Arrows.

With only seven fixtures left this season for Pirates, speculation around his (Mofokeng) future continues to intensify. Mofokeng has been linked with moves abroad for the past two years, but no deal materialised.

However, after what is shaping up to be his best season yet, a move overseas now appears increasingly likely, especially with the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, which could further boost his value and visibility in Europe.

Speaking about his preferred role, Mofokeng highlighted where he feels most effective on the pitch.

“I think the style we play here at Pirates suits me as a number 10,” he said after Bucs 5-0 win over Golden Arrows.

“I’m not really someone who likes running a lot. I prefer operating in tight spaces.

“So I think the number 10 position is best for me. I can also play on the wing, but my strongest position is as a 10.”

Orlando Pirates supporters might not know it yet but this last seven games could very well be Mofokeng’s farewell tour as he is destined with a big move.
