Vodacom Bulls flyhalf Curwin Bosch says he is eager to test himself against the All Blacks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday as he looks to force his way back into Springbok reckoning.

The 29-year-old described his likely first match against New Zealand as “an opportunity of a lifetime”.

Once hailed as one of South African rugby’s brightest prodigies, Bosch has returned to South Africa after two seasons in France with Brive, a spell he credits with reviving both his game and his love for rugby.

“It’s amazing to be back in South Africa,” Bosch said. “The two seasons I spent in France were really good for me, but there’s just no place like home. Even Pretoria, for me, feels like home.”

Bosch admitted the move abroad was less about unhappiness and more about escaping his comfort zone after years at the Sharks.

“I started becoming too comfortable at the Sharks. It was a safe space for me. I knew everyone, I knew the whole of Durban. Sometimes it is hard to leave that comfort, but it was exactly what I needed.”

He said the biggest benefit of his time in France was mental rather than technical.

“It was so good for me mentally, just to get the shackles off and get back to doing what I do best, and that’s just to play rugby. There’s no sideshows, no distractions.”

That freedom, he believes, has restored the instinctive attacking game that first made him stand out as a schoolboy star.

“I felt like I was a lot more free. The last couple of seasons in South Africa, I felt boxed in a little bit. That time in France freed me up, going back to almost how you used to play rugby at school. You see the space, and you play the space. That’s when I’m at my best.”

With the All Blacks clash looming, Bosch was clear his Springbok ambitions remain very much alive.

“The day those ambitions go away, I’ll stop playing rugby. My best will be good enough to make this squad.”

Asked whether he ever tires of having to prove himself, Bosch was pragmatic.

“It doesn’t really matter what you say. It’s what you produce out there on the field. Those actions will speak for everything else.”

Head coach Freda Kemp hopes her team’s victory on Tuesday will give netball a boost in the region, after hosts Cape Town edged Tshwane to lift the trophy at the Spar National Netball Championships.

In a tightly contested final that swung back and forth, experienced goal shooter Sigi Burger scored with one second left as Cape Town secured a narrow 56-55 win over Tshwane, who had gone unbeaten in their previous eight matches at the six-day domestic showpiece.

Having lost to Johannesburg in last year’s final, Kemp was delighted with her side’s hard-fought triumph.

“We lost the final by one point last year, and as they say, the table was set for us here in front of our home crowd,” Kemp said.

“We really worked hard to make sure the players had everything they needed to perform at the highest level, and we’re very proud of what we did today.”

Hoping for more financial support

While the Western Cape side won the title in 2016, when teams represented provinces, it was the first time Cape Town won the senior A division final since the structure of the national championships was changed, with teams now representing districts.

Though she was pleased with her squad’s performance, and with the progress they had made in terms of development, Kemp was particularly relieved to win the title because she believed this would help the Cape Town region rake in more support and funding for local netball.

“We’ve been working hard the last few years getting finances for netball, and I said to my team and the federation that we need to start winning in order to attract sponsors,” she said.

“So that was in the back of my mind, apart from developing netball and winning, to take netball forward in Cape Town.”

Tshwane making progress

With her team having finished fifth in last year’s tournament, Tshwane coach Rozanne Matthyse was satisfied with their turnaround, despite narrowly missing out on lifting the trophy.

“This could have been anybody’s game and I’m very proud. For me it’s 10 steps forward with such a young team – most of our players are under 25 – so we have a lot to be grateful for and I’m looking forward to what’s coming,” Matthyse said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mangaung earned a narrow 45-44 win over Johannesburg in the third-place play-off in the senior division.

In the U21 age group final, defending champions Johannesburg coasted to a convincing 53-38 victory over Tshwane.

Mamelodi Sundowns are in talks to secure a loan move for goalkeeper Jody February for the current campaign.

February has struggled for game time at Sundowns following his returning from a loan spell with AmaZulu.

According to his agent Mike Makaab, nothing has been finalised as yet, but there is a likelihood that February will leave Sundowns.

Having played second fiddle to both Ronwen Williams and Denis Onyango last term, the 30-year-old is eager to return to the pitch.

The return of Bafana Bafana second-choice goalkeeper Ricardo Goss to the club has moved February further down the pecking order.

Goss spent the two last seasons on loan at Siwelele FC, previously known as SuperSport United which is defunct.

And he is now set to challenge Williams for that No.1 spot under the tutelage of coach Miguel Cardoso at Sundowns.

SUNDOWNS TALKS TO SECURE FEBRUARY A MOVE

“Look for Ricardo Goss; we are looking at loan opportunities for him to get game-time and get back to the best form that we all know,” Makaab told FARPost.

“At the moment, nothing is final in terms of February’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns, as I said we are still looking at options for a loan move.”

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 11, 2026 – Hosting the 2029 World Athletics Championships will be a historic milestone for Kenya, motorsports queen Pauline Shegu believes.

Shegu says the effects of staging such a global showpiece would be felt for many generations to come, across all sectors of the Kenyan society.

“It would be a proud moment not only for Kenya but for the entire African continent to host this prestigious event. Africa has produced legendary athletes who have shaped the history of athletics, and the time is ripe for the world to experience the sport from its true powerhouse,” she said.

The veteran scribe’s comments comes a day after Kenya officially submitted its bid to host the competition, having expressed interest in doing so for the longest time.

If accepted, it would be the first time the championships is held in Africa — and Nairobi to be specific.

Shegu commended Athletics Kenya (AK) for the bold step, expressing confidence in the capital’s ability to stage a memorable championships.

“This is a bold and commendable step that reflects our nation’s growing capacity to host world-class sporting events. With Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, warm hospitality, and readily available sporting facilities, we have everything it takes to deliver a memorable championship experience,” she said.

She added that time is overripe for Kenya — as the cradle of middle and long distance athletics — to host the competition.

“As the home of some of the world’s greatest athletes, Kenya has consistently showcased excellence on the global stage. Our champions continue to inspire millions through their outstanding performances, proving that athletics is deeply woven into our national identity,” Shegu observed.

Kenya has previously bid to host the event — the 2025 edition — only to lose out to Tokyo.

Nairobi faces competition from London, Rome, and Munich for the 2029 edition.

The winning host cities for both the 2029 and 2031 championships will be announced by World Athletics after the Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary next month.
