WHO ARE PANAMA?
Ranked 33rd in the world (27 places above Bafana Bafana), Panama, known as Los Canaleros or La Marea Roja, have grown into one of the stronger sides in Central America. They made their World Cup debut in 2018, Russia, where Felipe Baloy scored their first-ever goal on that stage. The development continued with qualification for the 2026 World Cup, finishing top of their group in the final round.
Under the Danish-Spanish coach Thomas Christiansen, Panama have found consistency, reaching major finals in the region while building a balanced squad led by experienced captain Aníbal Godoy. With attacking players like José Fajardo and Ismael Díaz, they come in organised, confident, and far from the underdogs they once were.

UCU Lady Canons Face Stern JT Test
Friday, March 27
•JT Lady Jaguars Vs UCU Lady Canons – 7pm
•City Oilers Vs JT Jaguars – 9pm
UCU Lady Canons will put their unbeaten start to the season on the line when they face JT Lady Jaguars in a highly anticipated National Basketball League clash on Friday at Lugogo.
The Lady Canons have been flawless so far, winning all eight of their league games, but this encounter presents their toughest test yet against a side that has also impressed this season.
UCU heads into the game on the back of a hard-fought 65-55 victory over UPDF Lady Tomahawks on Wednesday. They had to dig deep after a slow start that saw them trail 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Matrina Anyango led the scoring with 12 points, while Christine Saima added 11 and Zoe Atek chipped in with 10. Sylvia Nantongo was dominant on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds to anchor the team’s inside presence.
The Lady Canons’ strength in depth proved decisive, as they dominated the rebounding battle 61-37 and contributed 41 points from the bench to seal the win. Nantongo, alongside Shilla Lamunu, also remain central to coach Nicholas Natuhereza’s plans heading into Friday’s showdown.
JT Lady Jaguars, meanwhile, have won eight of their nine games this season, with their only loss coming against defending champions JKL Lady Dolphins.
The side is coached by former UCU student Sudi Ulanga and features several former UCU players, adding extra intrigue to the contest.
Among those are Sarah Ageno, Rhoda Naggita, Maimuna Nabbosa, Brenda Kayaga, Bridget Aber, Annette Among, Shakira Nanvubya and Aziida Nabayunga.
The Jaguars come into the game full of confidence following a commanding 77-35 victory over Miracle Eaglets on Wednesday in Kira. Mercy Batamuliza recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Kayaga scored 16, Nabbosa added 13 and Ageno contributed 14.
Last season, the two sides shared the spoils, with JT winning the first-round meeting 57-52 before UCU responded with a 71-62 victory in the return fixture.

Athletics South Africa loses broadcast deal with SuperSport
In another major piece of news that has come to light, and which further underlines the fact that there is an ever-changing landscape when it comes to sports broadcasting in South Africa, it has been reported that Athletics South Africa events will no longer feature on SuperSport.
Instead, all running events and major marathons will now be on SABC, but the ramifications of this are significant.
In an exclusive video from Cash N Sport, a leading sports business authority, one of the most obvious consequences that was highlighted is the fact that this year’s iconic Comrades Marathon will not be on SuperSport this year after blockbuster coverage in 2025.
“The Comrades is coming up in June, and if your remember last year, SuperSport had 45 cameras covering the route, 25 hours of live broadcast and three dedicated channels including the main feed, one following the elite women and the finishers,” Cash N Sport reporter Nqobile Ndlovu explained.
“I highly doubt the SABC will be able to replicate that, but for consumers they probably won’t care, and will be happy just to see athletics back on SABC.”

Major changes
This news come in the wake of various reports about the changes impacting SuperSport as a result of the decision-making and cost-cutting of new group owner of MultiChoice, France’s CANAL+.
Recently, Trade union Solidarity has questioned whether Afrikaans commentary could be coming under threat on SuperSport, while SA Rugby executives recently met with their CANAL+ Group counterparts at the MultiChoice offices in Johannesburg to try and ensure there was a happy middle ground.
