Black Ferns outclass Bok Women

New Zealand’s Black Ferns scored eight tries in a convincing win against the Springbok Women at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors underlined their experience and class, leading 24-10 at half-time before going on to claim a 52-20 victory. playerbros.org

With a stiff breeze at their backs, the Black Ferns struck early when flank Elinor Plum-King scored from a quick-tap penalty.

The Bok Women struggled to exit their half into the wind and were punished when the visitors worked the ball wide to fullback Braxton Sorensen-McGee, who raced clear to score. Flyhalf Hannah King converted to make it 12-0 after 10 minutes.

The hosts hit back four minutes later from a lineout maul, with hooker Lindelwa Gwala driven over for an unconverted try.

Growing in confidence, the Bok Women began to find their rhythm and put New Zealand’s scrum under pressure, while wing Mererangi Paul was yellow-carded for deliberately knocking down a South African pass.

Centre Aphiwe Ngwevu then crashed over following a quick tap by scrumhalf Unam Tose after the visitors had been penalised for pulling down a driving maul. The conversion went wide, but at 12-10 the hosts were firmly back in the game.

However, two late first-half tries for the Black Ferns – through prop Chryss Viliko and Sorensen-McGee, both from quick-tap penalties – stretched their lead to 24-10 at the break.

Lock Vainah Ubisi scored from another strong driving maul in the 49th minute, with New Zealand losing two players to the sin bin in quick succession.

But the Black Ferns responded when scrumhalf Maia Joseph stepped past a defender to score their fifth try, with Sorensen-McGee adding the extras.

Gaps began to open in the South African defence and Plum-King went over untouched for her second try.

Ubisi scored a late consolation try for the hosts, going over for her second from a quick-tap penalty.

Springboks Outmuscle All Blacks in Soweto Thriller to Take Series Lead

As the icy Johannesburg wind whipped through a virtually sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday evening, the Soweto crowd generated a fierce heat of its own. Between the rolling Mexican waves, the sea of cell phone lights illuminating the stands to Coldplay’s A Sky Full of Stars, and the full-throated, rhythmic renditions of Shakira’s Waka Waka, the atmosphere was nothing short of electric.

Feeding off that pulsating energy, the Springboks delivered a titanic second-half surge to defeat the All Blacks 29-24, taking a vital 2-1 lead in the ‘Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry’ series before the finale in the United States next weekend. The hard-fought victory also etched Siya Kolisi’s name into the history books, marking a record 55th Test win for the iconic South African captain.

Breathless First Half of Attrition

The opening forty minutes were a chaotic, bruising affair that tested the absolute limits of South Africa’s defensive resolve. The Springboks found themselves on the back foot early, conceding a 10th-minute yellow card to Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu for a deliberate knock-on, followed by the devastating loss of fullback Cheslin Kolbe, who failed a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) and was replaced by Manie Libbok.

New Zealand capitalized instantly. All Blacks captain Ardie Savea powered over for the opening try to put the visitors up 7-0. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Springboks struck back in the 21st minute through Kurt-Lee Arendse, who finished beautifully in the corner following a sublime midfield hand-off and assist from Damian de Allende.

The All Blacks responded ruthlessly, with Savea securing his second try just minutes later after pouncing on a deflected ball. However, the momentum violently shifted on the stroke of halftime. After South Africa marched downfield, a powerful Springbok scrum five metres out decimated the New Zealand pack, resulting in a penalty try and a yellow card for Ruben Love. The decision sparked a massive 30-man brawl after Cobus Reinach upended Cam Roigard, leaving the teams deadlocked at 12-12 as they headed down the tunnel.

The Springboks Shift Gears

The All Blacks started the second half brightly, momentarily silencing the Soweto crowd when Will Jordan linked up with Leroy Carter to score his 54th Test try, putting New Zealand 17-12 ahead in the 56th minute. But from that moment on, the Springboks relentlessly squeezed the life out of the visitors.

It started with a moment of individual brilliance from Jesse Kriel. Finding a sliver of space in the 58th minute, Kriel pinned his ears back and tore through the All Blacks’ defensive line, finishing a spectacular solo effort. Feinberg-Mngomezulu slotted the tricky conversion, giving South Africa the lead for the first time in the match.

The vaunted ‘Bomb Squad’ then went to work. In the 66th minute, a brutal driving maul off a lineout allowed Malcolm Marx to steer the pack all the way under the posts. Feinberg-Mngomezulu added a clutch penalty from centre field in the 71st minute, pushing the Springboks into a commanding 29-17 lead.

Holding the Line

Despite dominating possession (57%) and forcing the Springboks to make an exhausting 150 tackles, the All Blacks struggled to crack South Africa’s green wall in the dying stages. A spectacular try-saving breakdown steal by Pieter-Steph du Toit and relentless defensive pressure kept New Zealand pinned back.

The All Blacks managed a consolation try through replacement hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho deep in stoppage time, but the 29-24 final scoreline belonged to South Africa.

The Springboks now pack their bags for Baltimore, USA, carrying a 2-1 series advantage and the undeniable momentum of a historic night in Johannesburg.

Kaizer Chiefs injury update: Mayo’s return date revealed?

Kaizer Chiefs are set to welcome back Khayisa Mayo from injury later this month.

The 28-year-old striker has not kicked a ball this season, with surgery having forced him to miss Chiefs’ pre-season camp in Spain in July.

According to reports, the former Cape Town City star is training with the team and should be available for selection towards the end of September.

An informer told KickOff that Mayo should return to acton on the 20th of September which will be good news as Chiefs are in need of a fit striker..

“The boy has healed nicely; what they are working on now is his fitness,” a source told KickOff.

“At the moment, he is still hitting the gym. They are still getting him back to his best again. It won’t take long though. The exact date set by the medical department for his return is the 20th of September. Everyone can see that the team is struggling up front. His return will really help,” the source added.

Mayo could inject life into Kaizer Chiefs attack

With Flavio Silva nursing an injury, Amakhosi only have Etiosa Ighodaro as the only fit striker. He has struggle for gametime due to injuries and is only regaining his fitness now.

Chiefs having Mayo will boost their attack in the coming weeks. Although he has scored only two goals since joining Amakhosi last year, the 28-year-old can be deadly once he finds consistency and supply.

Do you think Mayo wull score more than 10 goakls this season?

Boks edge All Blacks in Calabash thriller

The Springboks seized control of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series with a four-try victory against the All Blacks at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

South Africa and New Zealand went into half-time 12-12 after a fiercely contested opening 40 minutes that saw two yellow cards and a Bok demolition job at scrum time for a penalty try, as well as the loss of All Blacks skipper Ardie Savea and two-time World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe to injury.

A crowd of 85,976 at the Calabash then witnessed two tries and seven points from the boot of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu in the second half to secure a 29-24 triumph that also saw Siya Kolisi become the most successful Bok captain in history with 55 wins.

The result hands South Africa a 2-1 series lead and strengthens the Boks’ grip on the world No 1 ranking, with the Kiwis occupying second spot heading into next Saturday’s fourth and final Test in Baltimore.

The build-up had been dominated by a war of words – and a cancelled Airlink flyover – over scrum interpretations between Rassie Erasmus and Dave Rennie, sparked by their comments after last week’s Cape Town Test.

Kolbe had shifted to fullback for the Boks and Kurt-Lee Arendse onto the wing after Damian Willemse’s hamstring injury, with Ox Nché, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw restored up front and Feinberg-Mngomezulu again wearing the No 10 jersey in Handré Pollard’s absence.

Rennie countered with three All Blacks changes of his own, bringing in forwards Asafo Aumua, Sam Darry and Peter Lakai, while Tupou Vaa’i earned his 50th Test cap in the second row.

It was a frenetic pace to the opening stanza from the New Zealanders, who seemed to be getting away with penalisable offences at the breakdown while forcing the hosts into a yeoman amount of tackles with their high-tempo play.

Savea capitalised on it early, finishing off a lineout move in the 11th minute after Feinberg-Mngomezulu had been sin-binned for a deliberate knockdown, flyhalf Ruben Love converting for 7-0.

Kolbe failed a head injury assessment and took no further part, Manie Libbok replacing him.

Arendse hit back in the corner off a well-timed Damian de Allende pass, though Feinberg-Mngomezulu missed the extras.

Savea struck again minutes later, pouncing on a loose ball for his second try, before coming off with a shoulder injury and loose forward Wallace Sititi taking his place.

Love was yellow-carded for cynical defending as the Boks camped on the All Blacks line, and the pressure told – a powerful scrum earned maximum points to level matters at the break.

Love missed with an early penalty attempt, before the prolific Will Jordan finished off Leroy Carter’s break to nose the visitors ahead. Love’s conversion drifted wide again.

Jesse Kriel brushed off Carter to hit straight back for Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s first conversion of the half and give the Boks the lead for the first time in the match.

Marx then crashed over from a rumbling maul, Feinberg-Mngomezulu converting and later adding a penalty to stretch the advantage to 11 points.

Replacement Samisoni Taukei’aho’s late try, converted by No 15 Damian McKenzie, was mere consolation for the Kiwis.
