Verstappen expels journalist from news conference
SHANGHAI, China, March 26, 2026 – Max Verstappen ejected a journalist from his news conference at the Japanese Grand Prix because of a row that dates back to last year’s season finale in Abu Dhabi.
The Red Bull driver refused to start his session with the written media at Suzuka on Thursday after spotting the Guardian’s Giles Richards among the journalists present.
Verstappen said: “One second – I’m not speaking before he’s leaving.”
Richards asked whether Verstappen was serious, and whether it was to do with a question he had asked in the news conference after the final race of last season.
Verstappen responded to each of Richards’ questions with a curt: “Yeah,” before adding: “Get out.”
When Richards left the room, Verstappen said: “Now we can start.”
In a column in the Guardian, external, Richards said he was “deeply disappointed” by Verstappen’s actions and that his “colleagues in the press pack were universally shocked and offered concern” for his wellbeing.
Richards added: “I still admire Verstappen and I hope we can enjoy a better relationship in the future.
“Sometimes, difficult, awkward questions have to be asked. That’s the job that comes with the privilege.”
Verstappen’s problem with Richards arises from a question the Briton asked after the race in Abu Dhabi last year.
The Dutchman won but was unable to prevent himself losing out on the drivers’ title to McLaren’s Lando Norris by two points.
Richards asked after the race whether Verstappen now “regretted” his incident with Mercedes’ George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix in June earlier that year.
Verstappen appeared to deliberately drive into Russell’s car and was given a penalty that dropped him from fifth on the road to 10th. That cost him nine points.
Verstappen responded: “You forget all the other stuff that happened in my season. The only thing you mention is Barcelona. I knew that would come. You’re giving me a stupid grin now.
“I don’t know. Yeah, it’s part of racing at the end. You live and learn. The championship is one of 24 rounds. I’ve also had a lot of early Christmas presents given to me in the second half, so you can also question that.”
A source close to Verstappen, who did not want to be named, said he had reacted that way in Japan not because of the specific question that was asked last year, but the way it was asked and the reaction while Verstappen was answering it.
Verstappen had earlier in the weekend answered a question on the same topic, phrased in a different way, in a BBC Sport interview.
Asked why that incident happened, he said: “Probably because I’m too… driven. Because I never settle for ‘not good enough’, and we, of course, look for a comfortable podium.
“Then, of course, I got put on a strategy which was completely different to others. Then I get driven into the straight, I get driven into Turn One, and I get told that I have to give the position back, which I find ridiculous. And I never settle for that.
“I could have easily said, ‘I’m on the hard tyres, my race is gone’, and you just let everyone by, and it has to go with you. But that’s not how I am.
“But at the same time, of course, the reaction that came out of it is not good. But at the same time, it’s because I always, when I’m in the car, I give it 100%. I cannot sit there and be 95% and that just explains it.
“But of course, when you look back at it, it was not ideal. But it’s also moments that you learn from.”
Verstappen v Richards – what was said
Max Verstappen: “One second, I’m not speaking before he’s leaving.”
Giles Richards: “Seriously?”
Verstappen: “Yeah.”
Richards: “Because of the question last year?”
Verstappen: “Yeah.”
Richards: “You want me to leave?”
Verstappen: “Yeah.”
Richards: “It’s because of the question I asked you in Abu Dhabi?”
Verstappen: “Yeah.”
Richards: “About why you…”
Verstappen: “Yeah.”
Richards: “About Spain?”
Verstappen: “Get out.”
Richards: “You’re really, really upset about it?”
Verstappen: “Get out. Get out. Now we can start.”

Soweto Derby Legends clash scrapped for a second time
Fans hoping to see the icons of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates roll back the years will have to wait longer after the Soweto Derby Legends match was officially cancelled for the second time.
The exhibition fixture between the two PSL giants, which has been plagued by delays, was scheduled to take place this Sunday, 29 March, at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg. The event was initially set for 7 February but was postponed in hopes of a successful rescheduling.
In a statement released on Thursday, organisers Puzzle Pictures confirmed they had “pulled the plug” on the event, citing circumstances beyond their control.
‘A difficult decision’ to cancel Soweto Derby
The Soweto Derby match carried high stakes for the veteran players; the winners were slated to face an International Legends squad in a high-profile friendly this April. That dream, however, has been put on ice.
“This decision was not made lightly,” Puzzle Pictures said in a statement. “Despite our unwavering commitment and extensive efforts to bring this historic and nostalgic event to life, we have encountered circumstances beyond our control that have made it impossible to proceed as planned.”
The organisers expressed their gratitude to legends like Morgan Gould, Lucky Lekgwathi, and Josta Dladla, who had been training and preparing for the nostalgic showdown.
“To the football legends, your willingness to come together, relive iconic moments, and inspire a new generation is something we deeply appreciate,” the statement continued.
While the “vision” for a legends’ clash remains alive for the future, the immediate concern for many supporters is the hole in their pockets.
Organisers have moved to reassure the public that those who bought tickets will not be left out of pocket. All fans who purchased tickets through Ticketpro will receive full refunds processed directly through the provider.
The cancellation of the Soweto Derby Legends tie marks a disappointing end to a campaign that promised to celebrate South African football heritage, leaving the “Battle of the Giants” in the hands of the current Betway Premiership squads for now.

Harambee Stars eye upsets of upsets against European opposition
NAIROBI, Kenya, March 27, 2026 – Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy believes his charges can cause one of the biggest upsets of the international by beating Estonia in Friday’s international friendly.
The South African says they will be going out for a win in Kigali, in a match that he describes as ‘historic’ for Kenya.
“The players want to win but like I said, it’s a challenge. It’s the first time we play against European opposition. We want to test our skills against where we are in terms of levels and as a team, as a unit against this lot. If we manage to do exceptionally well, then when it comes Monday and we are in the final or we’ve won it, that would be a nice bonus,” McCarthy said.
The two teams clash for the first time in history in the newly-formed Fifa Global Series on Friday evening at the Amahoro Stadium.
Winner of the tie will book a date with that of the other fixture between the hosts and Grenada.
The final is penciled for Monday.
Who’s the favourite?
By way of the latest Fifa rankings, Kenya come into the tie as the stronger of the two on paper.

McCarthy’s charges lie 113th on the rankings, 16 places higher than Friday’s opponents.
The former Manchester United forwards coach is of a different opinion though, crowning the Europeans as the favourites to progress to the final.
It is why he believes a Harambee Stars win will send tremors around the footballing universe.
“We can also surprise a lot of people, even the opponents, we can surprise them. I think that’s where I think my team is at. But tomorrow it will, we’ll confirm that, you know, that we are making strides in the right direction,” McCarthy said.
The Kenyans have been boosted by the arrival of Tranmere Rovers’ Zech Obiero who was sorting out his passport issues in Nairobi before flying out to Kigali.
McCarthy says the 21-year-old is itching to go although the final decision on whether he starts or bids his time on the bench rests with the boss.
“Zech will be pretty involved, like after today’s training, then it will just decide that if he starts or if he starts from the bench. It also depends on how we want to set up against this team tomorrow. We can see how training goes today for him and and we make a decision from there on the starting 11,” the gaffer said.
Another foreign-born player, Clarke Oduor, will link up with his peers on Friday morning after sorting out his passport issues in Nairobi.
