Bulls get backline boost for Zebre duel

The Vodacom Bulls are primed to unleash serious speed and attacking flair in Saturday’s Vodacom URC battle against Zebre at Loftus Versfeld.

Bulls attack coach Neil de Bruin on Tuesday confirmed that Springbok star Canan Moodie is edging closer to a return from a hamstring injury.

Moodie was injured against the Dragons in mid-April and missed the URC win over the Scarlets in Wales two weeks ago.

“He trained nicely today [Tuesday] and is in a good space. A decision will be made closer to the weekend,” De Bruin told the media ahead of the clash with bottom-placed Zebre.

“He’s a world-class centre and one of the best wingers in the world.

“So whether we’re playing him either of those positions… I reckon he’ll probably be playing at No 9 or 10 as well, and he’ll be quality there.”

De Bruin said Moodie’s versatility provides the Bulls with options regardless of the opposition or conditions.

“Canan is such a versatile player for us and you try and fit the right puzzle piece that you need for the game and get those combinations ready,” he added.

“But it’s just about getting him fit first and then fitting him into the team wherever the team needs him.

“He’s been really good like that. He’s been open to shifting around and changing positions that the team requires, and it just speaks to his character.”

The Bulls are seventh on the standings and targeting back-to-back wins on the Highveld, with a visit from Benetton in the last round of the regular season next week.

Hat-trick for Cardoso; double delight for Appollis in April Betway Prem Awards

The dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns’ Miguel Cardoso and the resurgence of Orlando Pirates’ Oswin Appollis have been officially recognised, as the PSL confirmed the Betway Premiership individual award winners for April.

In a month that shifted the momentum of the title race, Cardoso achieved a rare feat by clinching his third consecutive Coach of the Month accolade, while Appollis scooped a double for the Sea Robbers.

CARDOSO’S THREE-PEAT

Since taking the reins at Chloorkop, Miguel Cardoso has made the dugout his own. The tactical mastermind steered Masandawana through a gruelling five-match schedule in April without tasting defeat.

With three wins and two draws, Cardoso’s consistency allowed Sundowns to reclaim the summit of the log, currently sitting on 64 points. He edged out Orlando Pirates’ Abdeslam Ouaddou and the Kaizer Chiefs duo of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef to secure a remarkable “hat-trick” of monthly honours.

APPOLLIS STEALS THE SHOW

While Cardoso ruled the touchline, Oswin Appollis was the undisputed king of the pitch. The Bafana Bafana winger has been named Player of the Month after a scintillating run that has kept Pirates’ mathematical title hopes alive.

Appollis’ April output was nothing short of elite, racking up four goals and an assist in just four outings. His clinical edge wasn’t just about the numbers, but the timing; his performances provided the spark necessary to keep the pressure on the league leaders.

To cement his dominance, the Bucs star also walked away with the Goal of the Month award. His strike against AmaZulu FC on April 18th—characterised by elite spatial awareness and a composed finish—is already being touted as a “Goal of the Season” contender.

THE TITLE RACE INTENSIFIES

The recognition comes at a fever pitch in the Betway Premiership. Sundowns currently hold a five-point cushion over Pirates (59 points) as the season enters its final stretch.

The battle for supremacy continues this week with high-stakes midweek fixtures: the Buccaneers travel to Stellenbosch FC, while the Brazilians host a resurgent Kaizer Chiefs side in a massive Tshwane-Soweto crossover.

Pereira lauds Awoniyi after match-winning brace at Chelsea

Nottingham Forest manager Vítor Pereira has heaped praise on striker Taiwo Awoniyi following his clinical brace in the club’s vital 3-1 away victory over Chelsea in the English Premier League.

Making only his second start of the current campaign, Awoniyi celebrated his milestone 100th appearance for Forest in spectacular fashion. His two-goal contribution has provided a massive boost to the Garibaldi’s hopes of securing their top-flight status and escaping the threat of relegation.

Pereira hails Awoniyi’s infectious spirit

Reflecting on the result during his post-match interview, Pereira expressed his immense delight regarding the Nigerian international’s performance and character.

“Until now, I have never seen Taiwo without a smile—never,” Pereira remarked. “Every single day, whether he is playing or not playing, he is the same person, the same fighter, with the same spirit and the same energy. I had no doubts that he would perform and score goals. In fact, I told him before the game, ‘you will score for sure today,’ and he went out and scored two. I am very happy for him, very happy for our supporters, and for all our players.”

Awoniyi’s double took his season tally to four goals in 14 appearances. The crucial victory keeps Forest in 16th place on the table with 42 points—establishing a six-point cushion above the relegation zone with only three matches remaining in the season.

Interestingly, Awoniyi’s only other start this term also came against Chelsea in the reverse fixture. History appears to be repeating itself, as the last time he recorded a Premier League brace was also against the Blues on May 13, 2025, when his goals played a similarly pivotal role in lifting Forest away from the bottom three.
